Chemical and mineral flame retardants belong to a diverse family of naturally occurring and man-made chemical compounds used to reduce the flammability of polymer formulations. Because the risk of fire can occur in many different situations and across innumerable applications, flame retardants can be found in everything from electronic devices to household furnishings.

Flame retardant additives are commonly used in the thermoplastic, thermosets, textiles and coatings industries. The correct flame retardant additive is selected based the polymer being used, compounding process conditions, temperatures and the service requirements of the finished part.

The Advantages of Flame Retardants

Flame retardants are organized by different classes depending on their chemistry, particle size, composition and applications. Generally they can be separated into mineral, organohalogen compound and organophosphorous compound categories.

Antimony oxides are used in conjunction with halogen compounds.

Brominated Flame Retardants

Brominated flame retardants are incorporated as halogen donors. They are commonly used in plastics, cable insulation and textile applications.

Chlorinated Paraffin

Primary applications of chlorinated paraffin in the polymer industry include flame retardancy and extension of primary plasticizer systems.

Mineral Flame Retardants

Silicone Based Additive

Resin modifiers & additives are used to reduce die drool and heat release rate during the extrusion process. They will also improve hydrophobicity and increase LOI.

Silicon Dioxide

Elkem: Sidistar & Sidishield

Silicon dioxide can be used to improve dispersion of high loadings of mineral flame retardants.  It can also be used as a partial antimony oxide replacement.
